Communication Communication works for those who work at it.

Part 1

1. What is communication (an activity of sharing information, the Internet, your mobile phone or an act of social interaction) for you? Think about the following quotes. Which one do you like most and why? a) “Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after.” . b) “When all other means of communication fail, try words”. c) “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” d) “The more elaborate our means of communication, the less we communicate.” e) “Communication is depositing a part of yourself in another person.” f) “Examine what is said, not who speaks”.

3. Find out if these statements are true or false by doing a class survey. If they are false, change them so that they are true.

The Present Perfect Tense

Affirmative

regular verbs: worked, asked (Ved)

irregular verbs: spoken, gone (V3)

Use

1. puts emphasis on the result: She has written five letters.

2. action that is still going on: School has not started yet.

3. finished action that has an influence on the present : I have lost my

key. 4. action that has taken place once, never or I have never

several times before the moment of speaking: been to Australia.

Signal Words of Present Perfect

Present Perfect vs Past Simple

The present perfect is used when the time period has NOT finished:

The past simple is used when the time period HAS finished: I saw three movies last week.

(Last week has finished.)

I have seen three movies this week. (This week has not finished yet.)

The past simple is used when the time period HAS finished: I saw three movies last week.

(Last week has finished.)

The present perfect is often used when giving recent news: Martin has crashed his car again. (This is new information.)

The past simple is used when giving older information: Martin crashed his car last year. (This is old information.)

The present perfect is used when the time is not specific: I have seen that movie already. (We don't know when.)

The past simple is used when the time is clear: I saw that movie on Thursday.

(We know exactly when.)

The present perfect is used with for and since, when the actions have not finished yet: I have lived in Victoria for five years. (I still live in Victoria.)

The past simple is used with for and since, when the actions have already finished: I lived in Victoria for five years. (I don't live in Victoria now.)

5. Give your partner a number and a letter. Your partner makes a sentence in the present perfect or the past simple: e.G.: She didn't phone me last week.

6. Read these messages. Decide if they are from an answer phone, an e-mail, a letter, or a postcard. How do you know?
