Mechanizations of Road Building Operations
The road building operations are very complicated because of the extensive length of the construction site. The construction site often occupies tens and hundreds of kilometers. This is why the road building operations require the introduction of special technique and methods of work organization.
The mechanization of road construction has grown since the war. This is true of such operations as earthwork, sand and gravel quarrying, stone crushing. It also concerns the completion of asphalt macadam and cement concrete surfacing.
It is known that different machines and mechanisms are being used in road construction nowadays. They are: crawler tractors, bulldozers, scrapers, rippers, graders, stone-crushes, rollers, screens, and others. The solution of road construction problem is closely connected with the reduction of cost and the improvement of quality of the work. Therefore it is important to apply the latest technique to road and bridge construction.
Snow clearance.
For snow clearing high speed lorries, fitted with straight blade ploughs will go out as soon as possible after snow begins to fall. Except in blizzard conditions they will be expected to prevent the accumulation of snow on the carriageway. The snow can be pushed either into the central reservation or to the nearside of the carriageway. The blade ploughs can be replaced by the high-wing “vee” ploughs which will be used to bulldozer. There will also be used the types of rotary snow ploughs “blower”, which can travel to any point on the motorway at relatively high speeds.
All these vehicles will be painted a golden yellow colour and will bear notices indicating by day or night when they are gritting or carrying a snow plough.
