TEXT: FIXED FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS
There are fixed extinguishing systems such as automatic sprinkler, drencher and some other systems.
Automatic sprinkler systems should be used for general protection of buildings. They are installed in buildings where serious fires can develop and spread. These systems can automatically detect fires at any time. As they have a fire detection alarm system they give alarm and deliver water to the seat of the fire. Sprinkler systems summon a fire brigade automatically when the first sprinkler head begins to operate.
Drencher systems are installed outside and inside buildings. The purpose of drencher systems is to protect buildings from outside fires, for example, from forest and tank fires and fires from nuclear explosions. The drencher heads protect combustible roofs and window openings. These systems may be operated automatically or manually.
There are also other fixed extinguishing systems such as carbon dioxide, foam, water and dry powder installations. These fixed installations are used for protection of large electrical equipment and plants containing flammable liquids. Besides they are used for protection of hazardous processes in many branches of industry.
1. Fire hazard in buildings may be divided into internal and external. 2. The purpose of drencher systems is to protect buildings from outside fires. 3. Sprinklers react automatically to the heat from a fire. 4. Sprinkler systems are regarded by the insurers as a considerable protection against fire losses. 5. Sprinklers both give warning and fight the fire. 6. Fire resistance is measured by the length of time, an element of structure will resist a fire of a prescribed severity without failure. 7. Automatic sprinkler systems are installed in buildings where serious fires can develop and spread. 8. Drencher systems are installed outside and inside buildings. 9. Fixed extinguishing systems are used for protection of hazardous processes. 10. Sprinkler systems summon a fire brigade automatically. 11. Drencher systems may be operated automatically or manually.

TEXT: APPLIANCES FOR FIRE BRIGADES
Fire brigades are equipped with some or all of the following appliances:
Self-propelled pumps, or fire engines, consist of a meter vehicle carrying a fire pump that is driven either by a “power take-off” from the engine of the vehicle or by a separate internal combustion engine. The pump is usually a centrifugal pump, capable of delivering 500-1000 gallons per minute, but may be a reciprocating pump.
Turntable ladders are constructed of steel and consist of a main ladder within which three or more extension ladders are raised by steel cables.
Water tenders are motor vehicles carrying a tank of water, often of 400-500 gallons capacity. They are valuable in country areas where water supplies are limited.
Other appliances include foam tenders, hoses, pipe-carriers, salvage tenders, radio vans, control units, communication units and tenders which carry gear such as searchlights, smoke exhausters and cutting sets, not provided on other appliances.
1. fire brigade; 2. fire pump; 3. fire ladder; 4. water tender; 5. searchlight; 6. cutting set.
a vehicle carrying a tank of water;
a big source of light to make easier the searches;
a group of people who fight against fire;
a unit with a number of steps to be used for fire escape in high buildings;
a set of knives and different sharp instruments in case of rescue emergency;
a unit which deliver water to the seat of a fire.
