  • Inspect the discharge nozzle or horn for obstructions.

  • Check to see if the operating instructions on the extinguisher nameplate are legible.

  • Determine if the extinguisher is full of agent. If an extinguisher is found to be deficient in weight by 10 percent, it should be removed from service and replaced.

  • Check the inspection tag for the date of the previous inspection, maintenance.

  • Examine the condition of the hose.

If any of the items listed are deficient, the extinguisher should be removed from service and repaired as required. The extinguisher should be replaced with an extinguisher that has an equal or greater rating.

All maintenance procedures should include a thorough examination of the three basic parts of an extinguisher: mechanical parts, extinguishing agents, and expelling means. Building owners should keep accurate and complete records of all maintenance and inspections that include the month, year, type of maintenance, and date of the last recharge. The inspector is responsible for reviewing these records.

Fire extinguishers should be thoroughly inspected at least once a year. Such an inspection is designed to provide maximum assurance that the extinguisher with operate effectively and safely.

Stored-pressure extinguishers containing a loaded stream agent should be disassembled for complete maintenance.

All carbon dioxide hose assemblies should have a conductivity test. Hoses found to be nonconductive must be replaced.

TEXT: FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT

There are three groups of fire fighting equipment for protection of buildings: portable fire extinguishing equipment for the use of occupants, fixed fire fighting systems and equipment for fire brigades.

Portable fire fighting equipment is used for the first aid on a fire. It must be easy to use. There is such portable fire fighting equipment as fire buckets, extinguishers and hose reels. Many people prefer to use extinguishers. Buildings can be protected by both extinguishers and hose reels. Hand extinguishers can work on fire more quickly and the attack on fire can be carried out by hose reels with their more lasting water supply.

There are water, foam, carbon dioxide extinguishers and extinguishers containing vaporizing liquids.

Water extinguishers are used for general protection of buildings. Foam extinguishers are used for suppression of flammable liquids. Both carbon dioxide extinguishers and extinguishers containing vaporizing liquids are used for suppression of fires in electrical equipment and plants containing flammable liquids. But the size of these extinguishers is small and the most agents used in them are toxic.

Hose reels are used for general protection of buildings. They are permanently connected to the water supply system through pipelines.
