Подытожим сказанное. Первая причина и творение различаются способом действия, потому что они различаются способом бытия. В Боге бытие и «то, что есть» тождественны, и Он действует через то, чем Он является, тогда как в конечном сущем бытие и id quod est различаются. В Боге нет потенции, а в творении она присутствует, ибо конечное сущее сохраняет отношение к «ничто», от которого произошло, и достигает активности в результате получения бытия от иного, а не в соответствии с тем, чем оно само является. Присутствие потенциальности в сущем свидетельствует о его открытости внешним причинам. В этом видна схожесть понимания бытия как акта в томизме и в философии Альберта Великого: как все творения проистекают от Бога, так все начала проистекают из бытия.
Метафизическая космология Альберта, как и Средневековья в целом, не может сохраниться в случае элиминации из нее Единого и идеи экзистенциальной зависимости сущего от Первой Причины. Когда в философии стало дурным тоном апеллировать в аргументации к Богу, то постепенно - с XVIII по XX вв. - «Единое» превратилось в нелегитимный термин, основания «догматической» онтологии были пересмотрены, а тезис Парменида о единстве сущего, в прошлом поддерживавшийся всей античной и средневековой традициями, сменился тезисом Алена Бадью «Единое не существует».
