Θ Before posting the letter, Isabella Hallberg added an extra paragraph. Listen to the recording and write down the paragraph she dictated.
Answer the questions:
1.What were the results of Mrs. Hallberg’s first year of work?
2.What are the main regulations to begin sub-franchising?
3.Why does Mrs. Hallberg request an exception?
Θ The following is the first page of the proposal enclosed in Mrs. Hallberg’s letter to
Scott Ringer.
Read the text.
BACKGROUND
Margareta Tntz is 28, widowed, with two children. Her parents are refugees from Hungary who settled in Norway when she was three. She has Norwegian nationality and speaks four languages including English.
She married when she was 17. When she was 20, her husband died in a car accident leaving her with two children and a pharmacy. She took over the running of the business and increased the number of stores to six in four years. She recently sold two of the stores.
She has always been interested in natural health and beauty aids. NEP’s range of pure health products, and Flavel’s skin and hair treatments were first introduced to the
Norwegian market through her stores. She attributes her success to the fact that her customers have a choice between traditional pharmaceutical products and a wide range of natural alternatives.
The importance of this side of her business has grown steadily over the years, while sales of traditional pharmaceuticals have remained static. Sales of natural products are now double pharmaceutical sales by value. She believes that the next logical step is to close her stores and reopen them as Body Care Centers.
PROJECTED VOLUME OF SALES
Margareta Tntz is convinced that the volume of sales in all her stores will rise dramatically when the image of her stores is more clearly defined and when the sales areas are devoted exclusively to those products that sell best.

Dear Mrs. Hallberg:
FRANCHISE APPLICATION: Ms. Margareta Tntz
Thank you for your letter of May 17, 200.. and the proposal that you enclosed.
As you point out in your letter, you have not yet completed two years as a Body Care head franchisee, or opened two or more stores. Both of these conditions are required before we can allow you to start sub-franchising. We do sometimes make exceptions, but as you have only recently been appointed head franchisee for Scandinavia we believe it would be in both your interest and ours if we played it by the book, in this case. Everyone here is very impressed by your sales figures. Keep up the good work.
Yours truly,
Scott Ringer

Θ Margareta Tntz asks Isabella Hallberg for $70000. Two of Ms. Tntz’s premises are in urgent need of structural repairs. She requests the loan so that the work can begin, in order to make the building ready for shopfitting as soon as the franchise is awarded. Confident that the central management will make an exception in Ms. Tntz’s case, Isabella Hallberg agrees to the loan.
When Isabella Hallberg receives Scott Ringer’s letter turning down her application, she arranges a meeting with Margareta Tntz. On the advice of her lawyer, she sends the following letter after the meeting.
